note: as of september 2007, this guide is obsolete.
so... you've decided to use a mac at lcc but have no idea how to access your files, first class, or the internet... WHAT DO YOU DO?
first off, don't panic. anything is possible in the world of computers, and i actually just discovered how to do this several hours ago (on september 12th).
if you know how to access the network preferences on a mac, good for you. if not, click on the apple in top left-hand corner and select "system preferences..." from the drop-down menu. now select "network" in the "internet & network" panel.
now we've opened up the network control panel. double-click on the airport option from the list. make sure that the "by default" list has "preferred networks" selected, and then click on the plus sign at the bottom of the network list. now enter the correct info by referring to this image and be sure to use your username and password (usually the first letter of your name followed by your last name). note: if you haven't already changed your password, you must do so on one of the school computers, located in the library or the computer labs. please ask me for the default password. now click on "ok", move the newly created network to the top of your list (by dragging and dropping it), and click on "apply now".
to access the internet using safari, you must change the proxy settings for your airport. to do this, click on the "proxies" tab and be sure to fill in the information shown in the image. note: when you want to use your laptop at home, you must uncheck the "web proxy" box in order for it to function properly. it must only be checked when using the internet at school.
once you come within range of this wireless network, your computer should automatically connect to it. it will inform you that it could not confirm the identity of the certificate being sent, but selecting the options in this image should fix that problem. once you are done, click on "continue".
now, if you need to access your "z" drive, type in command-k (the apple key held down while hitting down on k) and type in the following using your username.
that's it! you're done! if you have any problems, send me an e-mail or a first class message! :)
